“Stop, Look & Like”

When using social media to help grow your business and its reach, make sure you are posting quality content to get people’s attention. The goal is to make people “Stop, Look and Like”.

You want them to first Stop on your post. This takes a catchy lead sentence and/or graphic. Graphics are the way to go. This can be anything from a picture with added verbiage on it all the way to gifs. Reels are even better because that’s where people are spending their time. Making a reel can be time consuming but the payoff is much higher than posting a simple video. The easiest way to create a reel for social media is shooting 30 seconds of video, adding some captions and music is necessary. If you only have pictures, you can create a reel out of those as well. If you have access to programs like iMovie or Canva, you can put together even stronger reels (or graphics). The first objective is to get people to “stop” on your content.

Next you need to have people Look a your content. You want them to spend more than 3 seconds on your post. 3-5 seconds is about how long it takes someone to scroll past something and 3 seconds is the shortest amount of time Meta needs someone to view your content to count as a view. You need more than that to become effective. Writing in the description/comment section about what you have posted is critical. This will engage people for a lot longer.

Remember, at this point the goal is getting people to Stop, Look and finally read enough to give you the Like. Once you have a like from someone they are more likely to see more of your content in the future. But getting the Like (or “thumbs up”) isn’t easy. People consume more content than ever now and getting them to Like you isn’t as easy as saying “like” this as it once was. You can use humor, education, facts or offers. I’m personally not the biggest fan of the “like and share this for a chance to win” but it can be effective. Education is a good approach but you need to be entertaining while doing that (think about when you were sitting in school, that wasn’t always the most enjoyable time). Humor is great, but not everyone is a comedian. There does need to be a balance to get that coveted Like!

Social Media is always changing their algorithms, to make sure that your content and posts are viewed by more people and make your business more successful you need the Like. No matter how many changes Meta makes, liking content will make sure that you, as a business, will show up more often. Getting people to follow you is even better and a conversation for another time.
